You can choose

Did you know?

If your GP needs to refer you for a physical or mental health condition, in most cases you have a legal right to choose which hospital or service you go to, which includes many private and NHS hospitals that provide services to the NHS. You may also choose your clinical team led by a consultant or named healthcare professional.

If you want to find out more you can read this leaflet or visit www.nhs.uk/patientchoice

For information relating to local services in Norfolk and Waveney see the Heron website. Further details of your rights can be found in the NHS Constitution, you can find this here.

What happens when I am referred by my GP to a specialist?

Guidance for onward referrals

To further support delivery of the NHS Standard Contract 2017-19 measures, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, in collaboration with partners including NHS England, has published guidelines on the best practice on onward referrals. This short clinical guidance document outlines clear principles for how to avoid unnecessary doubling up of referrals and helping patients move more easily through the care system.

You will find other information relating to this on the NHS website including easy read leaflets and leaflets in languages other than English.
